BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

The Playoffs are Thataway!

I'm sorry but I don't remember when was the last time Stephon Marbury suited up in an NBA game. Obviously that was last season but that seems a lifetime ago for him or anybody.

I liked him as a player when he was Minnesota but they way he wormed himself out of there should have served notice to anyone of what was to come. Still you'd like to give second, third, maybe even fourth chances to people.

Don't tell me you didn't feel your hair stand up when Stephon entered with 19.4 seconds in the first quarter and the Boston Garden crowd of over 18,000 folks gave him a huge standing ovation? Sure the love will last only until his next prima donna antic/tantrum. But you can be sure he'll be out of here in a New York (oops this is Beantown but I couldn't resist the pun) if Danny Ainge can help it.

Like what Doc Rivers said, you can see his effect in the game (8 points, 2 assists, 1 steal . and 1 rebound in 13 minutes); the basketball IQ that helped the Celtics win against a gritty Pacers squad. He takes away minutes from my fave Celtics player outside the Big Three -- Casa -- but if it propels them to the NBA Finals, you do what you have to do.

So, Star. Redemption time is at hand for your legacy and an opportunity for a ring.

Read an old column of mine about the Marbury issue in New York:

When I say "column" it refers to my Monday columns in the Business Mirror.
